Do you need to get in shape before starting Pilates?
Short answer: No
You don’t need to get in shape to start Pilates. You do Pilates to get in shape.
And a good program meets you right where you are.
I think we’re thinking about this a little backwards. Think about it for a second. Let’s say you wanted to start painting. Would you say, “I have to get good at painting before I start painting”? Or maybe it’s tennis and you’ve never played. You wouldn’t say, “I need to get good at tennis before I start playing tennis.” It just doesn’t make sense, right?
Well the same is true for Pilates…
I talk to a lot of people about Pilates (as you can imagine) and one of the common themes I hear is… Pilates looks so hard! I think I need to get in shape before I start. Or I’m not flexible enough yet to do Pilates.
I think what’s actually going on here is that Pilates is intimidating. Big, unfamiliar machines. Moves you’ve never done before. So people throw up a barrier to keep from getting started.
But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Pilates is welcoming and Pilates meets you exactly where you are. In whatever shape you’re in. We build you up so that you feel confident and strong in the studio. And out in your life.
Why Pilates looks so intimidating
Pilates is a hard workout. It challenges your body in unfamiliar ways and on unfamiliar equipment.
Most people have picked up a dumbbell at some point. A Reformer, Cadillac, or Wunda Chair? Probably not.
And what you often see online or in studios are large group classes where everyone is doing the same, often advanced, movements.
So it makes sense that you’d think you need to be in shape before getting started.
What Pilates actually looks like when you start
In a good program, that’s not what your first experience looks like. Your Pilates practice should be built around you and your starting point.
You learn the foundational exercises (everything in Pilates builds on these). You learn about your body and how it’s designed to move. You learn what things actually feel like for you. Not just what they look like in other people.
And over time, your practice evolves with you.
Yes, you’re being challenged. But it’s the kind of challenge that builds you up. Not one that makes you feel behind.
What “meeting you where you are” actually means
We all walk into the studio with our own unique selves. Different bodies, histories, injuries, habits, and patterns.
All of those things matter. And they shape how you move, how you learn, and what your body needs.
So your Pilates practice shouldn’t look exactly like the person next to you. It should feel like it’s yours.
What this looks like in practice
In our studio, this means we don’t do one-size-fits-all classes.
Each person’s workout is different based on their body and their goals. The exercises, the resistance, the equipment. All of it is chosen with intention. That way, you’re not trying to keep up with the room. You’re learning how to work in your own body.
So no. You don’t need to get in shape before starting Pilates. You don’t need to be more flexible. You don’t need to “build up to it.” You don’t need to feel ready.
You just need to start!
And if you start in the right environment, with the right guidance, you’ll build strength, confidence, and understanding along the way.
That’s the whole point!
